He grew up with a talent for art and music leading him to earn a graphic design degree from San Jose State University. Martin eventually became an artist for Hallmark where he spent 27 years managing a 20-person art studio and later becoming a Master Artist. After retiring from Hallmark, Martin pursued his dream of writing an ongoing graphic memoir that honors his family and all the struggles they achieved.
