She has a background in filmmaking and a love for storytelling. Harrison earned her BA from the University of Virginia and then went on to receive her MFA in Film and Video from CalArts, where she took animation classes to learn from Disney and Dreamworks legends. Although Harrison is still insecure about her drawings, she has received various awards for her work. Big received a Caldecott Medal, Coretta Scott King Author Honor, and the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor in 2024. Harrison is also a two-time recipient of the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work for Children.
