Booklist - 09/01/2025 In Youngwolf’s (Tsalagiyi Nvdagi Tribe) debut picture book, Indigenous cousins learn a significant life lesson from their grandfather, the village chief. The elder instructs the children to introduce themselves to the Echo People, special teachers who live in the river gorge but can’t be seen. Standing on the bluff, surveying his surroundings, impulsive Little Wolf is irritated by the assignment and impatiently cries out, “Okay, Echo People, where are you?” The copycat response he hears, “Where are you . . . are you . . . are you . . . ?” further annoys him. All of the spiteful words he hurls are returned, leading him to denounce the Echo People as “terrible.” Quiet and serene Aiyanna has a vastly different experience, as her gentle words of love and kindness are echoed back to her. Emotive acrylic illustrations by Navajo artist Begay have impressionistic swirls of colors. An author’s endnote shares reflections on the importance of storytelling to Indigenous culture.
