School Library Journal - 10/01/2025 K-Gr 3—Though honeybees are some of the most recognized bees, about 20,000 species of bees are known to exist around the world. Some bees thrive in colonies while others are more solitary, and every bee plays an important role in the pollination of countless plants. Sadly, climate change is having a dramatic and negative effect on the habitat and survival of these important creatures. However, humans have begun making changes that may support the bee community for generations to come. This informative, approachable nonfiction title introduces readers of all ages to the many varieties of bees in the world and especially highlights the importance of wild bees. Narrative text explains featured concepts using rich descriptions that speak directly to readers. Though these passages are long, the content is intriguing, and the supporting elements on the page provide ample visual stimulus to balance the text. Colorful, detailed illustrations depict a variety of bees in their natural habitats, using hues and textures that are reminiscent of wildflower meadows. Additionally, a plethora of bee-themed jokes and puns enhance the enjoyment found in this book. A wealth of facts and encouraging guidance connect readers more deeply to bees in their vicinity, and back matter increases readers' learning potential. VERDICT Informative and engaging, this is an important addition to nonfiction library collections for elementary school-aged readers. —Mary Lanni - Copyright 2025 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.

Booklist - 11/01/2025 Even though there are about 20,000 species of bees, honeybees get all the glory. But in this book, wild solitary bees, which make up more than 90 percent of all bees on Earth and are native to North America (unlike honeybees), receive the attention they deserve. Cartoon wild bees—some green, some blue—serve as guides throughout. Topical double-page spreads explain how wild solitary bees differ from social bees, where these bees live (almost everywhere but hives), and their important role as pollinators. Two particularly interesting sections, with size and color comparisons, spotlight some of the “weirder” and “baddest” wild bees, such as vulture bees (which feed on dead animals) and the parasitic cuckoo bee. The final sections expand more on pollination (particularly how differently wild bees fulfill this role), some of the ways humans have harmed bee species, and conservation tips on how individuals can help wild bees survive. Colorful, pleasantly soft illustrations tie the book’s concepts together through images of up-close bees in action and a young girl saving their environment. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
