School Library Journal - 01/30/2026 Gr 2–6—The latest captivating Spanish-language edition from Tarshis's popular "I Survived" series puts readers right in the middle of the 2011 tornado that hit Joplin, MO. Eleven-year-old Dexter James's fictional firsthand account reimagines how a powerful twister ripped through the rural community of Joplin. Members of Dex's family have been in the town since 1925. The relatable Dex wants to witness weather cells' power up close, so he volunteers to help Dr. Norman Gage's storm chaser crew. Upon racing back to Joplin, Dex and Dr. Gage are hit head-on by the storm, and Gage is injured. The boy pushes through the chaos, inspired by older brother Jeremy, who is a Navy SEAL. This version of Tarshis's novel offers a fast-paced narrative that informs readers about the climactic changes endured annually in the Midwest—with deadly consequences. Readers will keep their fingers crossed for Dex and his newfound friends, knowing that a reunion with their loved ones, in true Tarshis tradition, is in store. VERDICT Another exciting volume in Tarshis's historical fiction series, this is a must-have for Spanish-language elementary shelves.—Sharon Sherman - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
