Booklist - 11/01/2025 In an attempt to fit in at school, Delia borrows her mother's beaded earrings without asking. But when one earring disappears down the sink drain, she worries her mom will be upset. Delia confides in her grandmother, wrestles with how to take responsibility, and finally comes clean. Delia's mom is upset, as she received these earrings as a gift when she got her Métis citizenship. Delia didn't even know they were Indigenous! Delia, Mom, and Grandma Jo begin more intentionally reconnecting to their Métis heritage by practicing traditional crafts and learning Michif, the Métis language. They even realize they'd already been making traditional Métis foods! Skene shows what healthy reconnection looks like while explaining why reconnection is necessary. Laurin's grayscale illustrations further bring the story to life and offer a look at traditional Métis beadwork and quillwork. Clear language makes themes of intergenerational healing accessible. Back matter includes an illustrated Michif glossary alongside an author’s note, complete with photographs relevant to the story. A relatable, enjoyable early chapter book. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
