Booklist - 07/01/2024 Originally created in the 1970s by Tezuka, Unico gets a fresh look in this new take on the vintage character. Capable of bringing happiness wherever he goes, pastel-colored, baby unicorn Unico is reviled by jealous, power-hungry Venus. To protect him, Zephyrus repeatedly removes his memories and secrets him away in a new location any time his powers get too noticeable. It’s on this backdrop that our story begins, when Unico meets Chloe, a brave but slightly clueless cat, and together they seek a safe place to call home. With all the energy of an animated cartoon, Gurihiru’s eye-catching, cinematic art in a lush color palette offers excellent character design, playing up the contrast between cute, rounded Unico and Chloe and the pretty but ominous look of Venus and her minions, especially a cruel hunter often threateningly wielding a gun. There’s lots at play in this first volume of a projected series, and it mostly serves to establish characters and backstory for later installments, but the epic stakes, rampant magic, and manga feel will likely give this wide appeal. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
