Booklist - 04/01/2025 The gaping maw spanning the cover of this high-interest introduction to hippos is on brand for the Dangerous Mammals series (6 titles). Though these elements deliberately imply alarming content will follow, the book presents relatively staid portraits of Africa’s river hippopotamus and Asia’s pygmy hippo. The no-frills layout uses caution-sign-yellow backgrounds, plain text boxes, and stock photos of hippos—the toothier, the better. Readers will gain a basic understanding of hippos’ habitats, diet, and appearance. The sections that highlight their dangerous behaviors (charging at high speeds, biting, flipping boats) never portray these animals sensationally. The text points out that these behaviors typically manifest when a hippo is protecting its young or feels threatened. A final section offers safety tips if one is ever in a hippo’s domain, and appended questions test reading comprehension. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
