Booklist - 04/15/2024 *Starred Review* Magdalena (Mags for short), a young, butch soon-to-be high-school graduate, is comfortable with her routine: caring for her kindly grandmother, working at a diner, and feeding her blood to the creature in the basement. It’s exhausting yet acceptable to her, until a childhood friend, Nessa, returns to town with questions and affection. As a relationship begins to bloom with Nessa, Mags unravels. Does her life need to be as difficult as she makes it out to be? Is the creature truly a curse and a bane? She may find that on the darkest night (the original title of this work, first published as a webcomic), light will shine through and show Mags the way to making peace with her secrets. Readers get a delightful taste of the California desert with a warm palette of reds and oranges set against clear skies, and expressive character design is complemented by thoughtful background details one would find in an Indigenous-coded town. The work features actual and imagined pinhole photographs that align with Nessa’s photography throughout the story, a tasteful addition to an already visually evocative work. Readers should take care as the work includes visibly bleeding wounds, the loss of a loved one, allusions to emotional abuse and manipulation, and gun violence. Supported by an eclectic cast of queer characters and touches of folkloric magic, Ostertag's latest demonstrates once again her ability to build immersive and moving stories of self-acceptance. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
