Booklist - 09/01/2025 Sims, Anyabwile, and Kellman breathe new life into the 2001 memoir by lauded, influential Myers with this graphic adaptation. “When I began to read, I began to exist,” Myers writes. As a youth, he's caught between two selves: one that must constantly prove and perform his masculinity with a short fuse temper and quick fists, and one that consumes books with breathtaking speed and composes poetry. Though he dreams of being an intellectual, he can’t get past how all the writers he learns about in school look nothing like him. In his tale of coming of age in Harlem in the 1940s, Myers confronts his past as a bully, exploring toxic masculinity, depression, and how class and racial systems make an already daunting journey seem impossible. Anyabwile and Kellman's artwork blends the vibrancy of Harlem with the comic books beloved by young Walter, nicely differentiating this newly visual exploration of the adolescence of one of the most respected youth authors of our time. An illuminating companion to the original. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
