Booklist - 04/01/2025 Mixing digital illustrations and photos, this guide in the If I Were A . . . series (4 titles) takes a playful approach to birds. After establishing that birds are animals with beaks and wings, the text asks readers to consider, “If you were a bird, what would you be?” Each ensuing double-page spread introduces a different type of bird and a noteworthy ability. A typical spread includes two large photos of the featured bird, a colorful text box and fact bubble, and a cartoon kid gleefully declaring why that’s the kind of bird they’d like to be. For example, a young acrobat wants to be a hummingbird “so I could do tricks in the air!” Also on offer are owls, flamingos, penguins, lyrebirds, weaver birds, peregrine falcons, and starlings. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
