Booklist - 04/01/2025 With opening nature tips like leave no trace and keep a respectful distance from wildlife, this guide may seem like it’s meant to educate young readers on interacting with everyday deciduous forest animals. Instead, Marsh has compiled a delightful compendium of how to identify enchanted versions of these common animals, clearly stating that the magical creatures she references are not spirit animals recognized by Indigenous peoples. Accompanied by charming artwork, the compendium is divided by general animal class (mammals, amphibians, birds, etc.) with succinct, two-page profiles of each featured animal. As in authentic wildlife guides, the profiles are composed of a colorful illustration, quick facts (habitat/range, diet, size, etc.), and a few paragraphs that describe the enchanted animal’s appearance, its habits and magical abilities, and how “researchers” have interpreted these findings. For example, enchanted deer have white spots that turn blue, pink, yellow, or even rainbow-colored in direct sunlight; enchanted lizards sport small horns, which researchers believe evolved from a dragon ancestor. Nature activities conclude this whimsical foray for fans of fairy folk and lore. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
