Booklist - 01/17/2024 After Arden is bullied by Marni, one of her seventh-grade classmates, Arden tells her best friend as well as her uncle Eli, a scientist who offers support and advice. He also gives her Ludwig, his African Grey parrot, to care for while he’s away on a lengthy research trip to study the species in its natural habitat. Though Arden loves science and longs for a pet, she initially finds Ludwig scary. But as she observes the bird, she becomes increasingly intrigued by his intelligence. At school, Marni threatens her. Terrified, yet ashamed of herself for not standing up to her nemesis, Arden finally confides in her mother, who takes practical steps to protect her daughter. Levy offers a well-paced, realistic story that explores bullying and its effects on the victim over a period of time, while offering fascinating information (and a bit of imaginative exaggeration, mentioned in the author’s note) about African Grey parrots. With well-drawn characters and an appealing first-person narration, Levy’s latest is a fine choice for middle-grade readers who prefer relatively short chapter books. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
