Booklist - 07/01/2025 That Casey can’t remember how he arrived at the Ghost Circus isn’t strange; rather, it’s the fact that he doesn't appear to be dead, yet he's not quite alive. Longtime circus resident Creepy Girl and her adorable, puppylike companion, Polterghost, decide to help Casey discover what happened to him and free him from this in-between state of being. Zhang’s artwork is the star of this show, as it implements an eerie palette of translucent electric blues, greens, and purples for the supernatural elements that contrast with the sturdy, saturated renderings of the living world. The figure of Lady Emerald is especially entrancing, as she performs an ethereal silks act, dangling from lengths of glowing, green fabric. Casey’s search for answers bleeds into a larger quest to understand how the Ghost Circus came to be and why so many souls, including Creepy Girl’s, are tied to it. The questions feel a bit existential at times, slowing the plot, but patient readers will be rewarded with a dazzling explosion of spreads depicting wild acrobatics, chaotic rebellion, and liberating revelations. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
