Booklist - 08/01/2024 There are two books in one in this fun, attractive introduction to octopuses. On one side of each page is a story about a snorkeling little girl meeting an octopus; each spread features the anthropomorphized creature and the steps of its interaction with its new human friend (“you”). You’ll want to shake hands with the octopus, says Kerbel (but don’t!). You’ll want to give it lots of space to swim around. Later, the octopus even initiates a game of hide-and-seek, leading to a fun reveal at the end. Opposite this tale are smaller-font details of octopus habits and characteristics, enough for simple science reports, discussing how the creatures can regrow limbs, are invertebrates (and what that means), and their sleep stages, among many other facts. The work closes with a page of extra facts and details. The fictional and factual sections are placed on large, full-spread illustrations of the little snorkeler, her ocean buddy, and ocean flora and fauna. Aqua, yellow, and pink tones dominate. An enjoyable addition to early science collections. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
