Other - 03/10/2025 A seven-year-old schemes to win prize money at her cousin’s wedding in a lively picture book that centers South Asian wedding traditions. Lulu, who has determined that weddings are good for "one thing... prize money," recollects the games played at previous such events, including blocking the groom’s entrance, stealing his shoes, and returning the shoes for "money... fame and fortune!" Being both underestimated and thwarted by three older cousins finds her ever more frustrated, but taking a breather under Nani’s shawl gives Lulu encouragement and leads to sweet moments of victory-and generosity, too. Kazi’s watercolor textures and digital palette of turquoise, magenta, and melon further brighten a high-energy family story that underlines how "laughter helps two families become one big family." Characters are portrayed with various skin tones. A note about South Asian wedding customs and a glossary conclude. Ages 4-8. (Apr.) - Copyright 2025

School Library Journal - 08/15/2025 K-Gr 2—Scheming and determined, seven-year-old Lulu is ready to prove herself during her cousin Amirah's wedding, especially during the much-anticipated wedding games. Though her older cousins dismiss her, Lulu is set on joining the fun, from blocking the groom's path to stealing and bargaining for the groom's shoes. At every turn she's just a step behind, until the final challenge arrives and the groom's shoes are nowhere to be found. It's time for Lulu to play an important role; in doing so, she not only claims her moment in the spotlight but also shows growth by choosing to share her reward. Set in a community within the South Asian diaspora, this warm and lively story offers readers a window into rich wedding traditions, while making connections around family, celebration, and belonging. The storytelling strikes a strong balance between brief, accessible text on each page, and vibrant, colorful illustrations that take center stage to convey both atmosphere and cultural detail. The design elements, including a wedding invitation as front matter and a thank-you note to Lulu at the end, immerse readers in the experience. Back matter includes a glossary and child-friendly notes that further support cultural understanding. Lulu's headstrong energy and earnest desire to be included will resonate especially with younger siblings or cousins eager to prove themselves. VERDICT A strong choice for collections seeking to broaden cultural representation while connecting to familiar themes of childhood independence and inclusion.—Louie Lauer - Copyright 2025 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
