School Library Journal - 04/01/2024 Gr 3–5—Wildlife researchers, bionics experts, and other scientists use their skills to help animals in a variety of ways covered in these titles. Whether young readers are interested in ocean life, pets, or endangered species, they will be inspired by the amazing developments in each field. Plentiful photographs show drones that can tag ocean life, wildlife crossings over busy roadways, and satellites used to count animal populations. Sidebars take a "Deep Dive" into specific topics such as 3-D printers used to create bionic limbs for animals or "Spotlight" companies designing helpful software. Each book ends with a "Save the Day" question encouraging students to reflect on what they have read. VERDICT Highly engaging, an excellent addition to library collections and just right for those readers who always asks for more animal books. - Copyright 2024 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
Booklist - 01/17/2024 Ready to lay your eyes on a penguin wearing a wetsuit, a microchip-activated pet door, garbage-gobbling robots, and drones that keep tabs on endangered species? These wondrous inventions and many others are contained in the Saving Animals with Science series (6 titles), which takes an irresistible approach to STEM topics. Each themed volume provides a light survey of products and technologies created to solve specific problems facing wild animals and pets, often touching upon environmental issues in the process. The books’ contents are divided into four easy-to-read chapters that liberally use captioned photos of animals interacting with the devices described by the text. “Spotlight On” pages profile an individual or specific topic related to the subject at hand. Pet Tech examines the applications of microchipping pets (mostly for identification) as well as robotic toys, automatic feeders, and pet cameras. A critical-thinking scenario closes each engaging volume. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
