Booklist - 04/01/2025 Magic is common in Whetherwhy, and every 13-year-old is tested to determine their seasonal proficiency. When twins Juniper and Rafferty take the typical exam, the results are anything but ordinary: Juniper shows an aptitude for all four seasons, making her an Enchanter. She’s enrolled at the kingdom's most-prestigious academy, while Rafferty accepts an apprenticeship at a nearby bookbindery—though strange occurrences conspire to keep them apart. As each is drawn into mysterious happenings in the city and at school, it’s only a matter of time before their paths cross in an unnerving way. Can the twins still trust each other, work together to unravel the secrets, and save their magical community? The gripping series opener carefully conjures a wonderful world of inventive magic and unconventional villains, and the seasonal approach to abilities is particularly intriguing. The sharp siblings split narrative duties, resulting in a large cast and multiple threads that tie together in a satisfying finish while leaving plenty of room for future installments. An enchanting exploration of a new magical world anchored in family and friendship. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
