Booklist - 01/01/2025 Throughout a day in the forest, a girl accompanied by a grown-up spots one baby animal after another (fawn, fledgling, bunnies, turtles, skunks, and raccoon), while learning a more about each creature and wondering how humans can help the little ones stay safe. Just as having a speckled back helps to camouflage the fawn lying in dappled sunlight on the forest floor, twilight later hides the raccoon kit’s presence in a tree until its mama returns to carry her baby back to their cozy den. While the girl quietly observes each animal, her parent shares information with her. The facts about each animal are brief and interesting, but secondary to the overall outlook: Don’t intercede. Step back, because one of the baby’s parents is usually nearby and knows how to protect their young. Nearly all the periods of observation end with the same winsome line: “So, whisper goodbye and go on your way, wild wanderer.” The text and the digital artwork create a warm, inviting tone. This picture book encourages respect and informed compassion toward animals. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
