Booklist - 09/01/2025 Fourteen-year-old Shif lives in an unnamed police state near the desert. When he and his best friend, Bini, attempt to flee the country, they are captured and taken by soldiers to a hellish desert prison, where Shif becomes prisoner no. 87 and Bini, 88. Miraculously they escape, but Bini is shot and captured, leaving Shif to go on alone. Managing to cross the border, he finds himself in the company of a family from his own country, and together they become refugees fleeing to a boat waiting to take them to Italy. But will they make it? What has happened to Shif’s mother and little sister? Is Bini still alive? Debut author Fountain has written a suspenseful, ripped-from-the-headlines story of the plight of refugees. That Shif tells his death-defying experiences in his own first-person voice lends immediacy to his story and a poignancy that is sure to excite readers’ empathy. Excellent for independent reading, this book will also be valuable for classroom use, where it is sure to excite discussion. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
