School Library Journal - 01/30/2026 PreS-Gr 3—The newest early reader from Dean and Dean offers a humorous, silly, and lighthearted glimpse into friendship, worry, and missing shoes. Pete the Cat wants to play outside with his friends but cannot find his best shoes. He tries on an old pair of boots, sneakers, galoshes, heels, and even slippers. However, each time he wishes for the lost shoes. After trying on multiple pairs, his friends come to the rescue. As always, the repetition and rhythm on every page create a sense of security for new readers. Adjectives (big, low, fancy, wide) are also used, giving emerging readers an array of descriptions. The colorful trademark artwork depicts big-eyed Pete trying out all sorts of wacky shoes to no avail, with his impatient friends in tow. Themes of perseverance are threaded throughout and remind children that finding the correct "fit" may take longer than just one try and that what is lost may be right under our noses. This book includes stickers. VERDICT A whimsical early readers that follows Pete the Cat and his playful friends, for collections serving new readers.—Brianna Amoscato - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
