School Library Journal - 03/27/2026 PreS-Gr 3—Everyone's favorite yellow pup Biscuit rides the ferry with his little girl and her family, who are on their way to see a lighthouse. Kind and agreeable Biscuit is taking the ferry for the first time with his family. The young girl speaks to him in a calm and steady manner to let him know what to expect on this journey. Along the way the young girl shows Biscuit exciting things like the seagulls above, the dolphins who pop up from the ocean, and a beautiful bridge the ferry passes. Biscuit even helps save the captain's hat that blows away from her, and at the end of the ride the young girl exclaims that they're finally at their destination. Art, done in the style of the original illustrator, Schories, uses soft linework and gentle colors to depict a beautiful lighthouse beaming bright. This is new addition to the Biscuit series in the "My First I Can Read" format continues to be a great introduction for children learning to read. Its bold font, short sentences, and frequent repetition will motivate children to read, especially with the compelling story of a beloved pet on a family trip. Biscuit's family is cued white. VERDICT This latest series installation is a strong purchase for children's collections.—Annmarie Braithwaite - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
Booklist - 05/01/2026 Capucilli’s most recent book in the My First I Can Read series about Biscuit features a simple plot: the adorable puppy takes a ride on the ferry with his little girl and her human family. They look forward to an enjoyable outing together, and Biscuit explores the boat and befriends a seagull as they make their way across the water. Along the way, they spot dolphins, ships, and a lighthouse. They even meet the ferry’s captain, after Biscuit saves her hat from going overboard. Like the story’s simple words, straightforward sentences, and concise paragraphs, the book’s jaunty pictures will appeal to many young children who are learning to read. Just as enticing are the illustrations of the puppy and his friend in Berlin’s appealing pictures, which were created in the style of the series' original illustrator. Preschoolers will also enjoy listening to the book when it’s read aloud and chiming in when they hear Biscuit’s favorite phrase: Woof! woof! woof!” - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
