Booklist - 02/01/2026 This first in a new King & Kayla spin-off series introduces readers to nine-year-old Hazel. Hazel is eager for her creative-writing camp to start, but her summer plans are scuttled after her curmudgeonly grandmother has a heart attack. Hazel, her mom, and their senior dog, Spot, travel from Chicago to Minnesota to help operate Dog Days, her grandmother’s doggy day care. Grandma is not thrilled with the assistance, which also includes Hazel’s mom’s childhood friend Mallory and her kids. As Hazel’s relationship with her grandmother begins to thaw, trouble brews when a sneaky dog gets loose and some secrets are uncovered. Kote’s grayscale illustrations contain lots of charm and personality, and their frequency helps break up blocks of text for independent readers still getting comfortable with longer books. Fans of the original series will be happy to see a cameo by Kayla and King, while new characters bring fresh perspectives to the familiar world. A list of the dog characters and their breeds is also included. A definite purchase for collections where Butler’s previous works are appreciated. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
