The use of graphic-novel storytelling and colorful illustrations offers instant appeal for more visual readers. Each slender book is modest in size, with 16 pages introducing and narrating the featured subject, as well as a few pages of related facts and several color photos in the back matter. Each story unfolds in text boxes and panels of illustrations, in which speech balloons carry remarks from athletes, coaches, spectators, and commentators. Miracle on Ice recalls the upset victory by the U.S. hockey team at the 1980 Olympics, where American collegiate players defeated a group of seasoned pros from the U.S.S.R.
