Booklist - 09/01/2024 Black American astronaut Charles Bolden begins his story by describing his first flight aboard a space shuttle, from the missions carried out to the emotions he experienced during the flight. Next, he recalls his initial decision to apply for the highly competitive astronaut program, the educational background and capability as an Air Force pilot that qualified him for the job, and his intense, extensive training program at NASA. Bolden also shares vivid recollections of his most notable missions, including the deployment of the Hubble space telescope. He recalls his years as a NASA astronaut, including the challenges of space flight, the unexpected glitches that sometimes occurred, and how he and other astronauts handled them. In addition to a time line and source notes, the extensive back matter includes an appended author’s note detailing his later experiences as a NASA administrator. Bolden’s lively narrative is as engaging as the well-captioned color photos that appear throughout the book. A detailed yet very readable introduction to the astronaut program at NASA from a well-informed source. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
