School Library Journal - 05/01/2025 Gr 2–4—Anna Hibiscus lives in Lagos, Nigeria, with her large, loving family. Each chapter follows a new experience for Anna while on a holiday to her grandparents' hometown with her older girl cousins. The older cousins teach the younger children letters and numbers, and Anna learns about the hunger many village children face. When she catches a boy stealing her banana, she discovers he is an orphan with no one to care for him. Instead of punishing him, she brings him food and befriends him. When he falls seriously ill, Anna calls on her family, who help pay for his medicine. Once he recovers, he agrees to move to the city with them. Together, Anna, her grandfather, and her older boy cousins work to build a school in the village, ensuring the children can continue learning after she leaves. Small grayscale illustrations throughout bring the setting to life, from the bustling market to Sunny's tiny home. These heartfelt and inspirational stories tackle difficult but important topics, showing young readers that even small actions can make a big difference. VERDICT A must-have for every collection, written by a Nigerian author, this series is both powerful and uplifting. - Copyright 2025 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
