School Library Journal - 02/01/2025 K-Gr 3—In the eat-or-be-eaten world of this story, every snack-sized reptile has to hustle to avoid becoming lunch. When the ever-appetizing Frog crosses paths with aspiring poet Coelophysis, Frog employs philosophical wits to redirect Coelophysis's thoughts from a grumbling tummy to poetry writing. Happily for the unlikely duo, there is plenty of scaled, winged, and sharp-toothed inspiration for creating poems of all kinds. Each of this graphic novel's five chapters opens with an illustration of a dinosaur that sparks conversation between Frog and Coelophysis in the coming pages. Angleberger uses quippy dialogue as a clever ruse to sneak in poetry lessons like limerick rhyming, epic poem characteristics, and haiku structure. Out of the digitally collaged panels of simply sketched dinos and notebook-lined speech bubbles arises a standout title pulling double duty as a compelling graphic novel and a poetry mentor text. VERDICT Elementary school readers and their teachers will delight in this laugh-out-loud narrative lesson on poetry writing, or even pick it up just for fun. A recommended purchase for school and public libraries.—Sarah Simpson - Copyright 2025 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
Booklist - 02/01/2025 When Coelophysis takes a break from writing a poem to eat a nearby frog, the frog attempts to stall the inevitable by helping the dinosaur write better poetry. Running from one style of poetry to another—and from larger, scarier dinosaurs—the two explore writing poems that evoke emotions, the senses, and the use of various rhyme schemes, all of which leads to the dino becoming a better writer. Angleberger, creator of the popular Origami Yoda series, adds humor and silliness to the dialogue, which keeps this poetry lesson from becoming too schoolish. Boldly outlined cartoon dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures drawn onto scraps of torn-paper textures are simple yet dynamic, with the story moving as fast as the two creatures run from a T-Rex. The first in a new series of graphic novels for young readers, this is sure to spark literary creativity along with lots of laughs. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
