Booklist - 02/01/2026 Starting with the title page and pulsing through to the final scene, dramatic close-up illustrations draw us into Giant Cuttlefish’s world, detailing key stages and moments of his life. We see him emerge from his egg sac, grow, hunt, and mate; when he passes away, we are left watching a new clutch of egg sacs. Powerful words propel readers forward, offering facts wrapped in vibrant descriptions, as when fins “ripple like a flouncy skirt” and his arms “protrude . . . like a fleshy beard.” The text does not shy away from accurate vocabulary, smoothly including scientific terms like papillae, chromatophores, and radula alongside vivid descriptors such as undulating and teeming. The clear context and detailed illustrations make these terms accessible rather than overwhelming—an impressive line to walk when explaining a creature not immediately familiar to most readers. Back matter includes a glossary, a bibliography, and several pages of more detailed cuttlefish information. Whether poring over it alone or sharing it, readers of all ages will be delighted by this book, which is easily as mesmerizing as its subject. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
