Booklist - 11/01/2024 A rosy-cheeked worm named Norbit greets the sun, and with a few other animal friends, they spend the day playing together. Repeated, easily decodable words (“I can eat. I can drink. We can eat! We can drink!”) are supported by unpretentious illustrations that depict what the text describes. The friends jump, play hide-and-seek, hike, swim, and more, though the text does not elaborate beyond these basic verbs, placing this solidly in the category of early-reader books rather than an engaging read-aloud. A few details in the images, such as a cloud unsure how to work a hula-hoop, may elicit giggles, but the text and story line do not yield any particular surprises. This is a part of the Seuss Studios series, and back matter explains how author and illustrator Watkins drew inspiration from sketches in the Seuss archives in developing the character of Norbit. Overall, a good-natured, serviceable book for newly emergent readers to tackle on their own. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
