Booklist - 01/01/2023 Soon after turning five, Winnie starts asking Mom the same question daily: “How many days ’til my birthday?” The answer is always discouraging. Though she tries to amuse herself, what could be as much fun as her birthday? But Mom makes a plan, and things change. One morning, Winnie awakens to the smell of popcorn for breakfast and her mother yelling, “Happy National Popcorn Day!” Every day, there’s something to celebrate, from Cheese Lovers’ Day to Opposite Day to Lost Sock Memorial Day. Her classmates tell Winnie about the holidays their families observe. After snuggling with dogs at a shelter on National Puppy Day, Winnie stops asking about her birthday and starts asking, “What holiday is tomorrow?” A list of 26 holidays celebrated or mentioned within the story is appended. Using dialogue within the narrative as well as illustrations’ speech balloons, the writing sets an upbeat tone that is reinforced by the vibrant digital artwork. A great read-aloud picture book for opening discussions of traditional holidays, more recently created ones, and ideas for new ones. - Copyright 2023 Booklist.
