Full Text Reviews:

Booklist - 04/01/2025 Olive Tran is excited because she is about to turn 10 years old, which means she’ll be able to walk to school on her own—and stop at the candy store on her way home. But the idea of walking alone becomes a little scary when people in the local Asian community start getting attacked in public (hints within the text suggest that Olive’s family is of Vietnamese decent, but this is never directly stated). Olive doesn’t understand why people are being mean to people in her cultural community, and it makes her feel upset and anxious. She is directly impacted when her good friend Josh nearly misses her birthday party because his father, who is white, develops anti-Asian prejudices. Thankfully, some pointed conversations set things right. Truong has written a timely story with conflict resolution, empathy, and kindness all rolled into one. The theme of racism is handled in an age-appropriate way that doesn’t sugarcoat the hurt that hate causes, and illustrations help readers pinpoint important scenes. A promising start to the Olive Tran chapter-book series. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
