Booklist - 10/01/2025 Terciero reenvisions the beloved classic tale of a young orphan girl's adventures in this story about 15-year-old Dan and his free-spirited mother as they head to a rural town in Tennessee. Dan is surprised that his mother would take them to his grandparents’ home, since their relationship is rocky, but he's even more surprised when his mother abandons him there. Brokenhearted by his mother's betrayal, he is forced to work on his grandparents’ small farm, enroll in high school, and deal with the homophobia and bigotry of the conservative Southern Baptist community. But Dan, like Anne Shirley, is fiercely himself, and even when he butts up against his grandfather's stony attitude, he does so with flair; soon he's softening hearts and encouraging bold choices all over town. Aguirre's expressive artwork beautifully captures the emotions of the characters, retaining the spirit of the original series while highlighting the realistic multiculturalism of contemporary Appalachia. This spirited, loving take on a classic will appeal to readers unfamiliar with Lucy Maud Montgomery's original, and those who love Anne Shirley will be delighted by the parallels. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
