Booklist - 04/15/2020 Entering an elaborate building with his parents, Simon excitedly surveys the impressive facade and large open spaces but quickly becomes bored. Chasing pigeons and lounging on a bench are fun, but watching other people provides the best entertainment. Simon notices that some people look at the art up close, while others stand far away; some are alone, others in groups. The artwork might make viewers laugh, elicit sadness, or even provoke an argument. Simon is pleasantly surprised to find one painting that speaks particularly to him. It features a red-headed child, running toward birds in flight. Are they pigeons? After a tiring day, Simon is ready to go home, until his mother proposes seeing one more thing—the museum restaurant. Colorful illustrations, rendered in pen and ink washes, use a light, sketchy style for the people, contrasted with more solid representations of ancient and modern sculptures, masks, and paintings.
