Booklist - 07/01/2025 Bill never wanted a little sister, and one day, he wishes Jane away. The siblings are living through WWII, and when they emerge from their bunker after a raid, they make a startling discovery—a badly injured boy, quickly rushed to the hospital and heavily bandaged before they can see his face. Bill, having been the only one who could hear the boy’s calls, seems suspicious, and the family ends up feeling obligated to care for the boy while he heals. What seems like an excellent scenario for Bill starts to become a little less so when he has to give up his bed and share his toys with a boy who won’t speak, instead just staring at him through his one unbandaged eye. When the bandages finally come off and the boy’s face is eerily familiar, Bill may find himself taking back all of his wishes to get rid of Jane. A fast-paced, very eerie story well suited to a high/low audience ranging from the youngest intrepid horror readers through striving older readers, in a dyslexia-friendly font and paper tones. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
