Booklist - 06/01/2025 Beowulf is a story filled with warriors, monsters, and gore, but the language of the original—and the often stilted translations and adaptations used in classrooms—can be a major obstacle for middle-grade readers, who would otherwise thrill to the gruesome adventure. That all changes with this slim volume, originally published in the UK, which pares down the epic to a trim 60ish pages that center on the engaging battles and grotesque monsters while using language that is straightforward but still lyrical. Beowulf’s defeat of Grendel and Grendel’s mother is contained here, and Riddell’s fine-lined illustrations nicely add to the atmosphere, particularly when depicting the monsters. Part of the publisher’s Everyone Can Be a Reader line, the book features dyslexia-friendly font, comfortable space around the text, and a package that does not otherwise call out that it’s designed for kids who might be struggling with literacy. A thoughtfully designed confidence builder that introduces readers to a foundational text with a thoroughly entertaining, well-paced monster tale. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
