Booklist - 09/01/2025 Canine narrator Rebel follows his 12-year-old owner, Tom, everywhere on his parents’ sheep farm. Though the setting is unspecified, the story seems to unfold in seventeenth-century civil war–torn Britain, where Rebel loves the routine of life on the farm, but young Tom is disillusioned. While the King’s guardsmen conduct patrols, there is a resistance group, the Reds, hiding in plain sight among the common folk. After a dastardly encounter with the guardsmen, Tom runs off to join the Reds. Distraught over Tom leaving, Rebel realizes Tom is more than his master, he is his friend, and the pup sets off to bring Tom home. A donkey, a dormouse, kind humans, and even a curmudgeonly wild dog all help Rebel along on his journey. Montgomery writes Rebel as the quintessential canine: aloof at times, but dedicated. Humor is found in Rebel’s enduring optimism, both of the world and of his situation, in comparison to the worldview of other animals. This is an easy pitch to readers who enjoy animal adventure stories. Recommend to dog lovers and fans of Pax (2016), by Sara Pennypacker. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
