School Library Journal - 06/01/2025 PreS-Gr 2—This heartwarming picture book models the joy and strength of just being oneself. Jordan, a Black elementary schooler, is due for a haircut. He knows from his mother and friends that a haircut can be a fun experience and a way to redefine yourself. But Jordan is happy with his afro just the way it is. The vibrant watercolor illustrations contribute to the warm atmosphere of the story, highlighting the book's themes of acceptance and encouragement. While this title focuses on the Black hair care experience, its positive portrayal of self-expression will resonate with readers of all identities. VERDICT This will find a home anywhere.—Maria Bohan - Copyright 2025 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.

Booklist - 01/01/2026 Miller has created another joyful celebration of Black hair, this time featuring Jordan, a boy who loves his soft crown and is not sure how—or if—he ever wants it cut. Picture day is coming up, though, and he nervously joins Mama at the barbershop when she goes to get one of the fresh cuts that make her so happy. His friends are there, too, each getting a style “as unique and interesting as the person in the chair.” Ultimately, Jordan chooses a full Afro and heads into picture day feeling “perfect.” Bright illustrations show a variety of ages, skin tones, and genders making up the supportive and creative Black barbershop community. Where other titles such as Crown and My Fade is Fresh revel in the joys of haircuts, this one showcases a child who is anxious about their first barbershop experience. Whatever their hairstyle, readers of all backgrounds will recognize the experience of navigating both curiosity and uncertainty about making a change and trying something new. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
