Booklist - 11/01/2025 Ancient Egypt has been an ongoing source of fascination for centuries, so it’s no wonder that some myths have persisted. This newest History Smashers entry tackles the wide-ranging topic with enthusiasm, gently guiding readers through millennia of misinformation. After laying some geographical guidelines, Messner digs right into the civilization’s beginnings and plows through to its eventual demise. There’s an important emphasis on the fact that historians and archaeologists are often making best guesses on specifics and that new discoveries naturally lead to updates. Many common assumptions are challenged (the use of the word pharaoh, the reason for the Sphinx’s missing nose, the legend of Tutankhamun’s curse), and there is a refreshingly in-depth discussion of appropriated artifacts and the current repatriation process. The engaging writing reads as casual but informative; mischievous comments and questions lend a light tone. Occasional papyrus scrolls contain extra anecdotes, and comic strips and cartoon embellishments add entertaining visual interest. Even established Egypt enthusiasts are sure to learn something new in this excellent overarching introduction. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
