Other - 03/23/2026 Beach-combing becomes an opportunity for perspective-taking in McMurdie and Escobar’s sunshiny science-led story. Simple, iterative narration jumps off from the title question, inviting readers to reflect on many animalian uses of a shell and other beachy found objects, as well as the creative purpose the elements might serve. Of driftwood, one of a rotating cast of children observes: "To a fish,/ it’s a nursery.// To a pelican, it’s a raft./ And to a seal,/ it’s a pillow.// But to me,/ it’s a PENCIL." Crayon-like markings detail textural digital renderings as round-faced children, depicted with varied skin tones, observe the seashore with wide-eyed wonder. Over progressive spreads, illustrations chronicle the creation of an elaborate sand castle adorned with the group’s discoveries. Disruption arrives in the form of a wave, but a final line suggests that the flexibility the children have cultivated across earlier observations will ensure future fun. The creators’ curiosity-driven storytelling effortlessly highlights the many discoveries to be made at the shore. Ages 3-5. (May) - Copyright 2026
