Booklist - 01/17/2024 In this brightly illustrated early chapter book from the Judy Moody and Friends series, Stink anxiously awaits his friend Webster’s arrival for their first-time-ever sleepover. When Stink’s big sister, Judy, asks him about the theme, he realizes that he doesn’t have one, but after Webster arrives, they agree that the theme will be Mars. They pretend to be astronauts, wearing their “spacy” pajamas as well as knee pads and bike helmets. Judy occasionally checks in with them, taking them cupcakes and blowing confetti into Stink’s bedroom with a hairdryer to simulate a dust storm. After a relatively short trip to the red planet, which the “Mars-o-nauts” bravely explore before returning safely to Earth, they experiment with alien-looking snack foods and, at last, fall asleep. McDonald offers an enjoyable, realistic tale of kids creating their own imaginative adventures. A typical double-page spread includes a dozen relatively short sentences and devotes somewhat more space to the expressive, vividly colorful acrylic paintings than to the text. Vicarious space travelers will find plenty to enjoy in this appealing story. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
