Booklist - 02/01/2025 Long takes on another notable topic from history in this volume in the Everyone Can Be a Reader series, written in a high/low format for reluctant readers and with a dyslexia-friendly font, tinted paper, and grayscale spot art. Mount Everest basics, including its height, location, and namesake (George Everest, a British surveyor who never saw the mountain that bears his name) kick off this title and provide a backdrop for stories about the mountain's early climbers. A chapter on sherpas offers additional background on their relationship to the area and the impact they have had on successful climbs. All of this leads up to the first known summit of Mount Everest by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Woven throughout are astounding details about climbing equipment (or lack thereof), dangerous conditions, and near-fatal and even fatal mistakes. A concluding chapter on Everest today sadly paints a less-inspiring picture, with overcrowding and human waste and pollution left along the mountain. A terrific account of derring-do for fans of adventure. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
