Booklist - 10/01/2024 This entry in the Monster Science series (4 titles) covers zombies, mummies, and Frankenstein’s monster. The introduction notes where the ideas for each monster came from and is followed by sections exploring each monster. It boils down to science: zombies can’t move gracefully or quickly—they’re susceptible to heat and cold since they can’t regulate their body temperature, and an unattended corpse is likely to explode. Likewise, mummies exist, but none of them is in any condition to pursue you. Egyptian mummies are packed in salt to draw out moisture, shriveling them to a fragile fraction of their size. The section about Frankenstein’s monster points out that reattachment surgery has improved, but not to the point of stitching together body parts from different people. The tone is breezy and fun, and a glossary, further reading sources, and an index round out the book. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
