School Library Journal - 10/01/2025 Gr 1–4—Following the events of the charming introduction to this series, The Apartment on Poppy Hill, Ella is back to make sure that everyone living in her San Francisco apartment house is having the best possible experience. In Resident in Charge, Ella helps her neighbor Cleo who is having an identity crisis, discovers a hidden space in the apartment complex, and helps throw a dinner party. In The Perfectly Imperfect Day, Ella surprises Cleo, helps Jacque make art, and makes the best of a rainy camping trip. Each volume has three interconnected stories that feel authentic in their problems and resolutions, focusing on found family and community. Albert's artwork is simple and expressive, bringing the beloved apartment complex characters to life. These stories bubble over with charm, sweetness, and an old-fashioned positivity that feels like exactly what the world needs right now. VERDICT Recommended for all collections. - Copyright 2025 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
Booklist - 06/01/2025 LaCour adds three more stories to the charming world of Ella Josephine Norwood in this sequel to The Apartment House on Poppy Hill (2023). In the first, “Identity Crisis,” Ella comes to the aid of one of the house’s newest residents, Cleo, whose move to San Francisco has left her feeling unmoored and homesick. Next, and perhaps most exciting, comes “The Empty Space,” in which Ella discovers a door to an unused room in the apartment house and achieves her dream of calling an apartment meeting to inform residents about its existence. Ella puts her house knowledge and organizational skills to good use in “Dinner Party,” after being recruited by the overwhelmed party host. It is a joy to spend time in the community that has blossomed among the Poppy Hill apartment residents, and though life in 1106 Wildflower Place may not always be perfect, it is always welcoming, respectful, and kind. Ella’s small adventures afford her time to think and grow, and her self-assurance and compassionate nature will inspire young readers. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
