Booklist - 03/01/2025 As a child, Rachel Carson loved walking through the woods near her family’s farm. Those rambles taught her to enjoy and respect the natural world. In her teens, memories of those experiences inspired her to write poems and stories, which appeared in children’s magazines. At school and in college, she loved learning about science, particularly biology, and wondered if she might write science books someday. When the Depression began, Carson supported family members who had lost their jobs. Later she would adopt two nieces and a great-nephew whose mothers had died. Through it all, she wrote well-researched, broadly influential books on humankind’s destruction of the environment and the practical steps necessary for preserving nature. Hannigan’s portrayal of young Rachel will endear her to many readers, particularly since Carson’s career path and accomplishments as an adult sprang from her childhood interests and talents. In Hickey’s illustrations, created using watercolor pencils, gouache paints, and digital tools, the visual transition of Carson from her childhood to her adult years is skillfully done.
