Booklist - 08/01/2021 After a boy finds a helpless fledgling crow, he pleads with his mother to allow him to raise it. A licensed wildlife rehabilitator, she makes sure that he understands the demands and responsibilities, but finally relents. Grandpa is less sure, convinced that crows are unintelligent pests, and the boy becomes determined to dispel his grandfather’s negative impressions. The bird, nicknamed Crowbar, pulls through and thrives, learning to cleverly navigate both the human and natural world. The mischievous corvid continually wows (and occasionally annoys) his adoptive family as he imitates human speech, nicks shiny coins and jewelry, and even earns Grandpa’s respect by utilizing a tool to play on a slide. Finally, a fully grown Crowbar joins a passing flock and takes to the wild skies. This fascinating story, based on a real George family experience, is lovingly told. While the text is uncomplicated and educational, the graphite-and-gouache illustrations, rendered by one of George’s longtime collaborators, charmingly capture Crowbar’s amazing and amusing antics.
