School Library Journal - 11/01/2023 Gr 7 Up—This historical graphic novel is from Tituba's point of view—the first person accused of practicing witchcraft during the Salem witch trials. The story follows the historical time line, starting with the events that caused Tituba to be accused and ending with her eventual judgment and punishment. Set in the 17th century, this work explores the socioeconomic background of the titular character and sheds light on how the enslaved woman came to be accused, and what pushed her to confess. Readers who enjoy comic book art will find this graphic novel appealing. Separate side sections help clarify historical details or specific story elements; for example, how and why to make a witch cake. This graphic novel is an exploration of the culture, religion, and political landscape of the early American colonies and how all those elements collided and caused a deadly reaction. VERDICT This work of nonfiction is a good overview of the Salem witch trials, and it may help students better understand the complicated situation. A good supplemental option for teen graphic novels.—Meaghan Nichols - Copyright 2023 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
