Booklist - 09/15/2024 This follow-up to 2023's NYT best-selling Greeking Out, based on the popular podcast, introduces 20 more Greek myths through short (5–10 pages), amusing stories. This time around, readers get a wide variety of mythical heroes (Jason, Orpheus, Oedipus) and Olympians (Hephaestus, Dionysus, Pan) plus many monsters and other famous characters. Everything about this book screams kid-appeal, from Espila's irresistible illustrations to the text's tongue-in-cheek, contemporary language (the Sphinx was a little bit extra). Taking to heart the idea that these stories have been retold over millennia, the authors offer their own original adaptations, making them relatable for middle-grade audiences—and age appropriate as well. The book's introduction notes the questionable ethics present in Greek legends, encouraging parents and readers to talk about the meaning behind each tale. In addition to the myths, interstitial spreads give information about real creatures, locations, etc., and short asides throughout offer additional context. Back matter includes an essential glossary (with pronunciations) and index. A valuable entry point into Greek myths for browsing, classroom use, and story time alike. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
