Booklist - 01/01/2026 Sam is an unrepentant fibber, lying about everything from the color of his bike to the state of his homework to the filling of his sandwich. Sam thinks it’s hilarious, but his classmates and teachers find it quite boring, and when one lie doesn’t get the response he hoped for, he tries something even bigger—too big, it turns out, since a bevy of emergency vehicles, camera crews, and food trucks surround his house once news gets out. Britt’s brightly colored, over-the-top cartoon artwork is the perfect medium for this outlandish story, filled with robots, dinosaurs, and aliens. References to the classic story “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” help drive home the overall message, but the conclusion is both gentler and more up-to-date than the original: instead of getting eaten, Sam is rightly scolded for erroneously calling on emergency services that could have helped other people actually in need of assistance. Newly independent readers will appreciate the playful artwork and silly story told in invitingly large panels and crisp fonts. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
