Booklist - 09/01/2025 Harper is known for two things: her delicious hot chocolate recipes and her family’s ice hockey legacy. The catch is, Harper hasn’t played ice hockey since an incident last season when she accidentally checked her teammate and best friend Bea into the boards, giving her a concussion. Though Bea forgave her, Harper has been unable to conquer her fear of returning to the ice or even speaking to Bea. Harper’s anxiety and perfectionism are realistically drawn, feeling particularly in tune with the pressures that can accompany athletics. When a new figure skater, Jason, shows up at the rink, Harper sees that she’s not the only one who is too hard on herself. Jason also has a past mistake to overcome in order to regain his confidence. Their conversations have an authentic awkwardness that gives this sweet story a sprinkle of romance alongside themes of athleticism and positive mental health. A good pick for middle-grade readers feeling the internal pressure to succeed. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
