Booklist - 10/01/2024 Debates, though not mandatory, play an important role in how the public perceives candidates during U.S. presidential elections. This overview uses five chapters to define the purpose of debates and debate formats, the roles of traditional and social media, and the impact debates can have on election results. The Nixon versus Kennedy debate in 1960 is used to illustrate how candidates who do badly in debates can lose support from the public. Color photos and sidebars provide supplemental information, the latter highlighting such topics as the importance of fact-checkers during debates. Readers will glean information on forces that shape public opinion, mis- and disinformation, and the opportunities debates provide. This title in the easy-to-understand Inside U.S. Elections series (6 titles) will help young people become more informed and engaged in civics education. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
